The county softens the water before it reaches your meter, and it’s still hard when it does. That changes what you should be quoted.

Towns here don’t all get their water from the same place. Find yours below.

What we do about it here

This is the one county where somebody has already treated your water for hardness before it arrives. We start from that, not from a chart.

  1. We check what arrived

The county softens first. Your number is what is left after that, not before it.

  2. Smaller than you were quoted

A unit here finishes a job already started, so it rarely needs the size a chart says.

  3. Kent is its own answer

Kent softens at its own plant. What reaches you there isn’t what reaches Streetsboro.

  4. Two systems in Aurora

Parts of Aurora drink lake water, parts drink county wells. We ask which before we quote.

Where we work in Portage County

Streetsboro, Kent, Ravenna, Aurora, Mantua, Brimfield, Shalersville, Suffield and Garrettsville. Streetsboro is our base, so this is the county we’re in most days of the week.

Portage County has a long entry on Wikipedia. For a private well, the Portage County Health District explains what counts as a private water system.

Portage County, Ohio. We cover all of it.

Ravenna is the exception worth knowing about

It’s the only system here that treats surface water rather than groundwater, and that shows up as taste rather than as scale. If your complaint is how the water tastes, that’s a different fix from a softener, and we’ll say so.

What fits

The systems Portage County homes usually need

Hardness is the live issue on most of this county's city water. Taste is the live issue in Ravenna. They aren’t the same purchase.

    Dual Tank — City Water

  • A single tall black tank with its media visible through a narrow window, and a smaller salt tank standing beside it.

Handles the two things almost every home around here has going on at once.

Portage County questions

Do you work in every part of Portage County?

Yes. We work in every city, village and township in Portage County. The full list is near the top of this page.

How do I book a visit in Portage County?

Fill in the form at the top of this page or call us. We set a time that suits you and confirm it.

Is the water test really free in Portage County?

Yes. The test is free, and you keep the numbers whether you buy anything or not.

If the county softens the water, do I still need a softener?

Often yes, and usually a smaller one than you were quoted. The county softens toward a target that works across thousands of homes, and what arrives at your meter is still in the hard band. The point of the free test is to find out how much is left to do at your house.

Is Kent water the same as Streetsboro water?

No. Kent softens at its own plant and publishes what goes in and what comes out. Streetsboro is on water the county softened under contract. Two different arrangements, two different results, about twelve miles apart.

Why does my water taste different from my friend in Ravenna?

Because Ravenna treats surface water and the rest of the county treats groundwater. Surface water carries more organic material, and what you taste is the byproduct of disinfecting it. Carbon handles that. A softener doesn’t.

I am in Aurora. Which water do I have?

One of two, and we check before quoting. Part of the city drinks Lake Erie water bought from Cleveland, and part drinks county groundwater from the Shalersville wells. Neighbours on opposite sides of Aurora aren’t drinking the same thing.

Who installs the system?

Installed by a licensed professional.
